The village of Amber was founded in 1873 when W.H. Sanford established a store at a location two miles west of the Midland Railroad depot. Amber was originally called Blue Cut. This name was derived from a deep cut the right-of-way builders drove through a nearby hill of solid blue clay. The name was changed to Amber in 1878 at the suggestion of Sanford.
Hula Hoop Tree
Amber was the home of the Hula Hoop Tree from 2015 until it was cut down in 2020. In 2015, a hula hoop lodged into the lifeless tree after a storm. It quickly became a popular spot to test your hula hoop throwing prowess for people passing through or locals who wanted to add to the tree. Not long after the first hula hoops were hoisted upon it, was decorated with hundreds of the plastic hula hoops. Unfortunately, the tree had to be felled due to safety reasons. The tree had its own Facebook page which is still active today.
